MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The Nuremberg Tribunal was an instrument to bring war criminals to justice, not a retaliation for the uncountable atrocities committed by Nazi Germany, former Soviet diplomat Enver Mamedov said.
"It is simply meaningless to talk that there has been made some kind a revenge, a responsive penalty of the victors over the conquered. The vast majority of society saw that justice, not punishment of the defeated Nazi Germany, was done in Nuremberg," Mamedov told RIA Novosti in an interview.
A total of 21 major Nazi war criminals and eight Nazi organizations, including the Gestapo secret police and the SS paramilitary group, were charged at the tribunal.
On October 1, 1946, twelve of the accused were sentenced to death, seven to life term prison sentences and three were acquitted.
