ANKARA (Sputnik) – Previous reports claimed the two alleged terrorists arrived in Turkey from Syria.
The two men, whose initials the Anadolu news service said were M.C. and A.Y, were found to be in possession of a live bomb and explosive vests packed with steel ball bearings.
The outlet cites prosecutors as saying the two alleged terrorists had returned from Syria, with which Turkey shares an extensive and porous southern border. The two suspects were taken to the Istanbul police headquarters for questioning.
The foiled twin suicide blasts were reportedly planned to be carried out at the Kizilay square in the heart of Ankara and the scene of extensive New Year's Eve celebrations.
Turkey stepped up security raids nationwide after a series of attacks claimed by both Daesh terrorists and Kurdish insurgents, including a suicide bomb blast in Ankara that killed over 100 people during a peace rally in October.
