According to a press release, the incident involving a Secret Service special officer stationed at the Washington, DC, field office occurred at approximately 4:00 p.m. Tuesday afternoon. Luckily, no one else was injured and no damage was done to nearby property.
The incident is being reviewed by the Office of Professional Responsibility and officials have remarked that no other person under the agency’s protection was within the vicinity.
This is not the first time a member of the prestigious protection detail has taken himself out: back in February 2011 an agent assigned to protect the former First Lady Nancy Reagan mistakenly shot himself in the hip at a firing range in Ventura, California. In that embarrassing mishap, the weapon discharged as the agent went to put his gun back in its holster.
